This year my mom suggested that, once a month, we invite some other homeschooled teens for a Friday afternoon hangout.  Our crafts so far have included: exquisite corpse, painted mushrooms, tattoo mugs, and diamond art bookmarks. It’s been great to meet up with friends over crafts, because I’m such an extrovert, and I really like being able to talk to people while doing something creative.

Our first art activity was exquisite corpse, which is a game invented by Surrealist artists in the 1920s.  Every person at the table draws one third of a person or creature, then folds the paper, and passes it along to their left or right. We all had completely different art styles, and it was really fun to see all of them mashed together!

We painted wooden mushrooms and tiny people for our second activity of the meetup, and they turned out so cute! I painted mostly mushrooms, and it almost felt like coloring, because there was already the perfect outline.

During the second meeting, we made diamond art bookmarks, and I was super surprised that nobody there had made diamond art before! My mom and I make them while we listen to audiobooks or watch a movie we’ve seen a billion times, so they’ve been a staple in our craft rotation for a while.

But my favorite craft so far has definitely been the tattoo mugs. We found Richard Scarry temporary tattoos, so obviously I had to use them for my mug. The end product feels so vintage, and I love using it!

Some of the crafts we’ve planned for the future are Lego building, origami, colored pencil sketching, block printing, and tinfoil sculptures.

I’m especially  looking forward to tinfoil sculptures, and I have a secret agenda with that…I really want to make a Coraline doll with some clay over the tinfoil! I’ve seen people make them, and they always look so good.
